Meet Our Green Team:

Zendo Kern
Owner, Founder, and CEO

Zendo (Zen) Kern was born and raised on the Big Island of Hawaii. He grew up in a home that was off –grid and built by his father, thus giving him an appreciation for sustainable living and environmental stewardship.  Zen has been an entrepreneur from a young age and has always had a passion for construction. 

Shortly after finishing school he moved to the west coast of Canada, Vancouver Island, for a few years. There he was able to delve into his passion for construction by working on timber frame and custom wood homes. After gaining experience in working with different varieties of homes, Zen wanted to use his knowledge of building in his familiar home on the Big Island. He returned to Hawaii a proficient carpenter with a strong understanding of how the business worked.

After returning home Zen obtained his Contractor’s License and began operating a successful business. From 2003-2005 he was involved in the Downtown Hilo Improvement Association, as one of the original members of the Downtown Hilo Steering Committee. In 2007 he won the SBA (Small Business Award) Young Entrepreneur of the year for the County of Hawaii. Zen’s goal is to provide high quality services and products that will improve the lives of our clients and the community. 

His philosophy is to promote a win-win situation for all stakeholders on a project.

Shaun Perry
General Manager and Green Building Consultant

Born and raised in Hawaii, Shaun brings a thorough knowledge of the local environment, codes, appropriate material selection, and strong business relationships to our projects.

Shaun was born and raised on Maui, but has lived on the Big Island since 1991.  Having worked in the construction industry for nearly ten years, he knows the local availability of materials and has developed strong relationships with supply houses and subcontractors.  He understands which techniques and materials are appropriate for our region and where to go for the best prices and service. 

Having lived his whole life in Hawaii, Shaun has an intimate understanding of the local environment.  Being part Hawaiian, Shaun shares the traditional values of his ancestors in conserving and managing our natural resources for future generations and promoting a sustainable future for Hawaii.
